How Shifting Mindsets Can Transform Your Chiropractic Practice

Perspective is everything. It can turn frustration into compassion, conflict into understanding, and challenges into opportunities. In chiropractic practice and in life how you see a situation often determines how you respond to it.

Let’s start with a simple story.

The Cookie Story: A Lesson in Perspective

A young woman sat in an airport lounge, waiting for a delayed flight. She bought a small bag of cookies to enjoy while she waited. As she sat down to read, she noticed a man sitting beside her.

To her shock, when she took a cookie from the bag, he took one too. For every cookie she grabbed, he followed suit without a word. Her frustration grew until only one cookie remained. The man broke it in half, offered her one piece, smiled, and left.

Moments later, she opened her purse and there was her unopened bag of cookies.

She had been eating his cookies the entire time.

This simple story reminds us: perspective shapes our emotions, our actions, and the way we interpret reality.

Perspective in Chiropractic Practice

This lesson translates perfectly into chiropractic care. Every day, you interact with people who walk into your office with different expectations, beliefs, and understandings of what chiropractic truly is.

Take, for example, a recent coaching scenario. One of our clients worked with a 17-year-old patient who had achieved amazing results during her initial corrective care. When it came time for renewal, her father who wasn’t present at the original report of findings came instead of her mother.

The dad was thrilled with the results… until money entered the conversation. Suddenly, he refused to move forward, saying, “We’re going to a chiropractor where we don’t have to pay anything.”

Understanding the Patient’s Perspective

From his point of view, chiropractic was a service for pain relief, and if pain relief could be “free” somewhere else, why not take it?

But as chiropractors, we know the truth chiropractic care isn’t about treating symptoms. It’s about optimizing health, removing subluxations, and allowing the body to heal from within.

This is where your skill as a communicator becomes essential. Instead of arguing or trying to “sell” him, the goal is to guide him to a new perspective.

How to Shift a Patient’s Perspective

In this case, the doctor was coached to start with empathy and curiosity:

“John, if I could get care for free, I’d want that too. But just so I understand—your insurance does require a co-pay, right?”

This question invites agreement and responsibility. Then, gently introducing awareness:

“Did you know it’s actually illegal for doctors to waive co-pays and deductibles?”

This simple shift reframes the dad’s belief helping him see the integrity of proper care versus the short-term illusion of “free.”

The Takeaway: You’re Not Selling, You’re Reframing

Changing perspective isn’t about confrontation. It’s about compassion, understanding, and clarity.

When you operate from curiosity rather than defensiveness, your tone softens, your presence strengthens, and your communication becomes far more powerful.

Tony Robbins often says: “Change your story, change your life.” The same applies in chiropractic. Change your patient’s story from pain relief to wellness, from cost to value and you transform not just your conversion rates, but your impact.
